Welcome to the Participant Hub

We’re excited to have you here! We're trialling a new way to reduce waste and you're one of 3,000 properties to be part of it. Fortnightly collections of your general rubbish bin started in July 2025.

Not sure which bins to put out for collection?

Thank you for helping to transform the norm.

Thank you for helping to transform the norm

Thank you to everyone in the fortnightly rubbish trial. Your efforts to sort and separate your food waste and recycling are having a real impact.

After the first 6 months of trialling fortnightly rubbish collections, you have:

  • Reduced waste sent to landfill by 19% - that's a reduction of 3kg per household each fortnight!
  • Almost doubled the amount of food waste put into food and garden organics (FOGO) bins, from 29% pre-trial to 56% after 6 months
  • Diverted 65% of your waste and recycling away from landfill, compared to just 51% for the rest of Merri-bek.

Well done Hadfield! You are putting 2 and a half times more food waste in the FOGO bin than before the trial began.

We heard mixed views about fortnightly rubbish collections. Some have found it easy, while others are finding it more challenging - especially those living in large households. We also heard that some households need a larger bin.

Do you need a larger rubbish bin?

We increased the standard size rubbish bin from 80 litres to 120 litres when the trial started.

Larger rubbish bins are available, if needed. We encourage you to try reducing your waste first, since larger rubbish bins cost more. Concessions are available, where eligible households can get a larger bin for no extra cost. Click here to see your bin size options.

Property owners saving money on waste charge

It costs less to collect rubbish bins every 2 weeks. Smaller bins have a lower waste charge than larger bins. So, depending on the size of your rubbish bin, property owners are saving between $30 and $70 on their general rubbish waste charge in 2025-26 compared to households not in the trial.
