What you need to know
We're trialling fortnightly rubbish collections.
We'll collect your rubbish bin every 2 weeks instead of every week.
Your rubbish bin has a red or dark green lid.
If your bin has a dark green lid, we will change it to a new black bin with a red lid.
We'll give you a larger 120-litre rubbish bin. This will be our new standard size. You can choose to have a smaller or larger bin if you need it.
We'll also support you to put all your food waste into your food and garden organics (FOGO) bin instead of your rubbish bin. This will reduce waste in your rubbish bin.
There are options for large bins at no extra cost for eligible households, like those with young children in nappies or large families. This is called a concession. Click here to find out if you're eligible
It's costing more to send waste to landfill, so reducing waste to landfill is more important than ever before. This trial aims to help keep landfill and collection costs (which make up your waste charge) low for the future. while also reducing the environmental impacts of food waste in landfill.
More than 20 Victorian councils already collect rubbish bins every 2 weeks. They’re sending less to landfill because people put their food scraps in the food and garden organics (FOGO) bin every week.
Their experience shows that making the switch to fortnightly rubbish collections reduces collection costs and encourages residents to put more food waste in their FOGO bin (which is collected weekly) instead of their rubbish bin. This is the last step to get even more food waste out of the red bin and into the green bin, where it can be turned into compost to help grow the food we eat.
We've noticed a lot of food scraps still being put in rubbish bins - about a third of what's in there is food waste. That's like throwing out 5 meals every week!
By trialling fortnightly collections, we can save you money and create more compost for community gardens and Victorian farmers.
Watch the video below to find out how your food and garden waste is turned into compost and used by farms and gardens to help grow the food we eat.
The trial starts 1 July 2025.
There will be no rubbish collection in the first week of July.
Your first rubbish collection as part of the trial will be in the second week of July – the week commencing 7 July 2025 – on your usual collection day.
3,000 households, apartments, units, businesses, sports clubs and other venues that use Council's waste services will take part.
- Choose your preferred rubbish bin size before 21 February 2025.
- Start learning how to cut down your waste and use your food and garden organics (FOGO) bin more. Visit our Reduce your household waste page to get started.
