Why do we ask you to register?
Merri-bek is a diverse community and we want our community engagement to reflect that. We want our decisions to benefit as many of the diverse people living, working and playing in Merri-bek as possible.
By signing up and telling us how you identify you are helping us understand who we are hearing from.
The information you provide when you register helps us to:
- Ensure we are hearing from all different types of people
- Make our engagement projects more accessible and inclusive
- Meet our legislative obligations
- Protect the integrity of the conversations on our site
- Keep surveys and other activities shorter for you.
Creating an account
- Find the rust-coloured "LOG IN/JOIN" button at the top of the page and click it to start registering.
- Select "SIGN UP" to create a new profile.
Once you have an account select "LOG IN". - To create your profile you will need to answer the required questions and then select "CREATE ACCOUNT".
- You can now participate in any online engagement on Conversations Merri-bek.
The information we collect helps us to understand who we are hearing from. We will not use your information for any other purpose and all your answers will be de-identified when we report on our engagements.
In the signup form we will ask you:
- To create a username. This doesn't have to be your actual name - it can be anything you want.
- To provide an email address. We may use your email to update you about: new projects, projects you follow or important information about the site. You can unsubscribe from email updates at any time.
- To create a password for future log-ins. Your password must have a minimum length of 5 characters.
- Which suburb you live in. You can select from the list of Merri-bek suburbs or select Other and type your suburb.
- What your connection to Merri-bek is. You can tell us if you are a:
- Resident
- Worker
- Visitor
- Business owner
- Ratepayer living outside Merri-bek
- Your year of birth.
- About your gender identity. You can tell is if you are:
- Woman/girl
- Man/boy
- Gender diverse
- Prefer not to say
- Prefer to self-identify as...
- If you were born overseas.
- What your cultural background is.
- Which languages you speak at home.
- If you identify as any of the following:
- A person living with a disability
- Carer of a person living with a disability
- A parent or guardian of children
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- A member of the LGBTIQA+ community
- A person experiencing homelessness
- A person who resides outside of Australia
- None of these
- Prefer not to say
Lastly, we will ask you to agree to our Privacy Statement.
When you are logged in you can select the "My Profile" button at the top of the page. Here you can update any of your personal details and unsubscribe from email updates.
If you would like to deactivate your account or delete your data you can email engagement@merri-bek.vic.gov.au with your request.
The personal information we collect will be be used for the purpose of community engagement and reporting and may also be used to update your personal information otherwise held by Council (for example, contact details including email address, phone number).
The information may be disclosed to project staff within Council and selected consultants that are engaged on projects. Your information will be de-identified as much as is practicable. It will not be disclosed to any other external party without your consent, unless required or authorised by law.
Merri-bek City Council is committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) and the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic).

Other ways to join the conversation
We understand that, for many different reasons, not everyone feels comfortable to signup or share personal details online. If you want to participate in an engagement but don't want to register for Conversations Merri-bek or participate online, we always welcome feedback through other channels including:
