Access to transport impacts our access to employment, goods and services including health services, exercise and social interactions. The system and the vehicles that operate on it produce air and noise pollution that can negatively impact our health.

From the Discussion Paper

Health vision

  • We will work to ensure our transport system will help improve our community’s mental and physical health by making it easier to walk or ride for fitness, recreation, and everyday transport trips.
  • Our local streets and activity centres will bring us together as a community, so we can meet our social needs and participate in the local community.
  • We will work to reduce the impact that our climate has on people, and the environment in which we live work and play by reducing the urban heat island effect and increasing trees and green space close to where we live.

Health objectives

  1. To support our community to reduce their transport emissions as rapidly as possible by providing increased transport choice and supporting a transition to zero emission vehicles
  2. To use our transport system to increase the size and quality of our green spaces.
  3. To adapt our transport infrastructure and services to meet the demands of a hotter and more unpredictable climate.

What would support people to exercise and socialise more?
