We’re working to make Hope Street an easier, safer and more enjoyable street to navigate and use for residents, as well as all the people who travel through the area to get wherever they need to go, from creek to creek.

Our proposed designs aim to improve safety and amenity, reduce vehicle volumes and rat running, and create a better-functioning streetscape both as a place to live and visit, and to travel through.

Proposed designs

We’ve created a concept design for how we could make these improvements to Hope Street.

The design was developed utilising community feedback gathered earlier this year.

As Hope Street is a long stretch of road, the design is split into 8 sections. These sections each contain design choices tailored for the unique needs of that section of road and work together to improve the experience of using, visiting and living on Hope Street.

This design is not final. Your feedback will help us shape a final design.

What happens next

Your feedback will help us create a final detailed design for the Hope Street streetscape improvement project. This final design will be presented as a recommendation to Councillors at a Council meeting.

If endorsed, the design will be constructed over stages, subject to Council’s design process and various external approvals.

Level Crossing Removal works and ongoing construction in the area may have impacts on some construction. We will advise of these impacts as information is available.

Project context

As Brunswick has evolved over the years, requirements of our road network have changed significantly.

In its current design, Hope Street experiences high traffic volumes and is often used as a ‘rat run’, or short cut, by cars, creating an unsafe on-road environment for all road users.

We’re seeking to implement changes that will improve safety and amenity for everyone who uses the street, and reduce rat running, to create a better-functioning, greener streetscape.

The project has 4 main goals:

This project is being developed as part of our Streets for People Plan.

Hope Street is located in Brunswick between the Moonee Ponds Creek and Sydney Road. This project plan will cover the full length of this street, between Moonee Ponds Creek and Sydney Road.

The section of Hope Street west of Melville Road was originally not in scope for streetscape improvements, however this has been adapted in response to community feedback and development of the Breese Street precinct streetscape improvements.

Hope Street is a residential street that carries a mix of transport types, including the 509 Bus to Barkly Square. It borders the Brunswick Central Parklands Area, and features small sections of commercial activity, particularly in the section toward the Upfield Corridor.

Breese Street is located very close to Antsey Railway Station on the Upfield Line, and 2 level crossings at Hope Street and Albion Street.

The State Government announced in September of 2024 that they will be removing all the level crossings in Brunswick from Park Street to Albion Street, including those at Hope Street and Albion Street, as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).

The State Government further indicated that the project will include construction of two new railway stations, including one north of Hope Street, and the closure of Anstey Railway Station.

No further details on the LXRP plans for this area are currently available.

These decisions will be taken into consideration when developing our plans for the Breese Street improvements, and future improvements to Hope Street. A Council endorsed masterplan for this area will assist in our negotiations with the State Government during this construction of the Level Crossing Removal Project.
