End-of-year update

19 December 2025

We are currently planning the construction staging for the O’Hea Street bike lane extension.

This is a complex project, so we have divided it into 3 stages for delivery. This approach is designed to optimise construction while minimising impacts to bike riders using the existing lane.

Stage 1

The first stage of the project is the new signal installation.

We are currently waiting for the Department of Transport and Planning to finalise approvals for the signals at Sussex St and O’Hea Street, which will allow us to finalise the construction plans.

We are committed to finalising these construction plans this financial year and will commence signal works as soon as possible.

Once installed, they will be usable for eastbound bike riders while we commence works on Stages 2 and 3.

Stage 2

Stage 2 of construction will involve modifying and improving the roundabout and crossing at Derby Street.

Stage 3

With the first 2 stages installed to create safer conditions at major intersections, we will progress finally to Stage 3 of construction.

In this stage, we will install the new separated bike lanes and road resurfacing. Current line marking will be updated to accommodate the new bi-directional bike lanes.

The timeline for stages 2 and 3 will be finalised while completing the new signal works.

We expect that all stages of the bike lane extension will be completed in the 2027-28 financial year.

We will let residents know about any upcoming works, ensuring that properties are still accessible and impacts are minimal.

We wish you a safe and happy end of year period and look forward to continuing to improve how our community can move around Merri-bek in 2026.
