Additional asbestos make-safe works

22 March 2024

We are currently making major upgrades to Hosken Reserve. We have previously notified you of asbestos found at Hosken Reserve in January 2024. In January, we carried out works to make sure the soil was safe.

During recent landscaping works more asbestos has been found in soil at the reserve. As a precautionary measure wherever civil and landscaping works need to be carried out, will now be considered to contain asbestos. All of these areas will be made safe.

This asbestos found, is also considered non-friable. Non-friable means the asbestos is solid, it cannot be crumbled or released into the air. The soil that contains asbestos is currently sealed, under-cover and is inaccessible to the public.

Safety has been our utmost priority for workers and residents nearby and we wish to keep the public informed that we are taking and will continue to take all necessary precautions. All works have been overseen by industry experts including hygienists and licensed asbestos removalists.

To complete these make-safe works, the asbestos-containing soil will be removed between Tuesday 26 March to Friday 31 May 2024.

What to expect

  • All works will be completed by competent and qualified asbestos removalists.
  • All necessary OHS conditions have been met and will be followed throughout the make-safe works.
  • Air monitoring will be conducted during all works to ensure the safety of workers and residents.
  • Workers are required to wear respiratory protective equipment and personal protective equipment for their protection since they will be working directly with the soil.
  • During these works, access to the reserve will be restricted — thank you for your understanding.

Residents must follow signs, barriers, and instructions for your safety and that of the workers. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us on 9240 1111.

We will provide updates on any significant developments during the works. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
