Pascoe Vale bike route endorsed

21 June 2024

At the Council Meeting on Wednesday 12 June, Council endorsed the community’s preferred bicycle route to connect the Glenroy to Coburg bike route through Pascoe Vale. This endorsed route is the existing route, which travels via Kent Road and Derby Street.

This route was found to be the community’s preferred option of 6 potential routes via feedback gathered through our community engagement.

As no new commitments to infrastructure changes have been made, budget allocated to this project will be used to make improvements in the suburb to improve safety for all road users.

Council has committed to:

  • Resurface Kent Road between Cornwall Road and Cumberland Road
  • Install a raised zebra pedestrian crossing outside the Pascoe Vale Health Medical Centre

We will also investigate options to install lighting along the KW Joyce Reserve shared user path that links Northumberland Road to Kent Road, making it more user-friendly for people walking and riding at night.

Other actions

Along with a preference for the route, we heard other feedback and suggestions from our community for how we can improve walking and riding bikes in Pascoe Vale. We will be exploring ways to make these improvements.

This includes upgrades to wayfinding signage and linemarking to support the Pascoe Vale Shimmy Route, which serves as an import local connection for riders, and the installation of speed humps on all approaches to the intersection of Olive Grove and Sylvan Grove.

We will also write to the Department of Transport and Planning to request safe cycling infrastructure along Pascoe Street and Boundary Road, as the community identified this as key priority.

Finally, we will continue to monitor the speed of vehicles travelling in this area, particularly on the roads with the new 40km/h speed limit, and design and seek funding for changes that will support safer travel along these roads.

What happens now

Designs and other actions will commence to make these improvements.

We will be preparing a comprehensive plan for a safe, direct and comfortable bike network between Glenroy and Coburg as part of the Streets for People Plan being prepared in the 2024/25 Financial Year.

Timelines for construction on all these projects are still to be determined.

We will be in touch with affected residents prior to any works.
