End-of-year update

24 December 2025

Thank you for your interest and involvement in shaping bike parking in Merri-bek throughout 2025.

Since wrapping up our community consultation period in July, we have been working on analysing the feedback and making plans for our bike parking changes.

New bike hoops

During our consultation period in May, we received many requests and suggestions for new locations for bike hoops to be installed. We have analysed these requests and have determined the most requested and suitable locations.

The first steps have been taken to progress these new hoop locations to be installed, and these will be rolled out progressively through 2026 and beyond.

Some popular locations were requested that are unfortunately outside of Council’s control. For example, Woolworths at Coburg Central and Brunswick. Though we are unable to install bike hoops in those locations ourselves, we will advocate to Woolworths in 2026 to make these changes.

Bike hangar

During our community consultation period, we also asked for expressions of interest in a bike hangar program, and suggestions for locations for bike hangars.

This program would be an Australian-first, with these hangars already a popular service overseas allowing more people to ride bikes who otherwise may not be able to.

Council has purchased and is currently constructing the first hangar. It is scheduled to be installed in early 2026 at Elm Grove in Coburg, near Coburg Civic Centre.

This will be a 'proof of concept' hangar that Council staff and Councillors will test out to determine suitability. This process will also allow our works team to familiarise themselves with the installation and maintenance of the hangars.

If satisfied that this hangar is the right fit for Merri-bek, we are planning to install approximately 5 hangars across Merri-bek at some of the locations most requested by our interested community members.

We will be in touch with those who expressed their interest in taking part in the bike hangar program at that stage.
