We are proposing to create a linear vegetated swale at Austin Crescent Reserve in Pascoe Vale. The swale is ephemeral. This means it only allows water to run through after rain. It will look like a shallow, gently sloping channel that is lined with indigenous plant

This project will help to:

  • Restore Westbreen Creek
  • Improve water quality
  • Support local wildlife and improve biodiversity in the area
  • Support the local community by cooling the area and adding green, shaded areas.

Urban stormwater runoff from the surrounding area will be directed into the swale to filter pollutants before it reaches Westbreen Creek.

Over time, it will support sedges, rushes, and small native grasses, creating a natural, green corridor that blends with the surrounding parkland while providing habitat for local wildlife.

On this page you can learn more about the new swale, explore the concept plans and let us know your feedback in the survey at the bottom.

Creek History

Use the slider to compare the Austin Crescent reserve area in 1951 with how it looked in 2025.

This historical aerial imagery shows that Westbreen Creek once ran through the reserve before urban development. The creek supported vegetation, cooled the landscape, and guided water through the catchment.

The new vegetated swale reflects aspects of the former creek condition. The swale is designed using gentle landform and natural drainage to slow, filter and manage stormwater during rainfall.

The design responds to modern needs for water management and acknowledges the site’s environmental history.
