Milo and his partner

In March-April 2023, Melek received a bigger 240 litre mixed recycling bin. This bin will be collected every 2 weeks from July 2023 and offers the same amount of space for recycling as Melek currently has (120 litres per week).

A new 120 litre glass recycling bin will be delivered to Melek’s home by mid-June 2023. This bin will be collected every 4 weeks (monthly) from 1 July 2023. Glass bottles and jars go in this bin.

Melek already has a food and garden organics bin. (It used to be called the green waste bin). If she doesn't have a kitchen caddy to collect her food scraps in, she can pick one up from their nearest Council Customer Service Centre. Using this bin for food scraps and garden clippings will create more space in Melek’s general rubbish bin.

There will be no change to Melek’s general rubbish bin. She will keep her current bin and it will continue to be collected every week.

As Melek lives alone, she may not have much waste and recycling. She can choose to have smaller bins where available. The smallest available bin sizes for each waste stream are:

  • 120 litre mixed recycling bin
  • 120 litre food and garden organics bin
  • 120 litre glass recycling bin
  • 80 litre general rubbish bin.

As a ratepayer, Melek pays the waste charge based on the size of each of her bins. Should she choose to get smaller bins, she will pay a lower waste charge, because smaller bins cost less.

Requests for smaller bins can be made from August 2023.
