Congratulations to all project participants and partners on your 2020 VIC Premier's Design Awards - First Round Judging Results... you were all finalists! Winners were announced at the 2020 Victorian Premier’s Design Awards Ceremony as part of the 2021 Melbourne Design Week in March 2021. The complete project nomination is here.

In June 2020, a collaborative art project between Coburg Primary School students and a local artist came to life in Coburg’s Russell Street when COVID-19 school closures stopped the original planned workshops in their tracks.

Council officers, local artist Stephanie Hughes and Coburg Primary School Visual Arts teacher Nib Stark were forced to think outside the box to bring the grade five and six students from Coburg Primary School together to complete the project.

But with some creative thinking, students were coached by Ms Hughes and Ms Stark via online workshops, their drawings completed at home, then scanned and submitted to arrange the artwork.

The sustainability themed artwork has been installed on the new Exeloo and adjacent power substation box in Russell Street, behind Coburg Primary School and is a great example of what engaged place making can achieve even during challenging times.

This project is part of Council’s Russell Street precinct improvement upgrade, including new paving, pedestrian crossings, street furniture, trees and landscaping and a public toilet.

***The mural will be one of many local artworks bought to life with animation and sound as part of Council's SmartARt Moreland augmented reality project which will re-launch late 2020.

***All project participation, including mini site celebration and documentary footage completed within COVID-19 State Government restrictions at the time

The goals behind this project were to:

  • Use the new infrastructure (Exeloo public toilet and water fountain), plus the nearby power substation to activate the public space
  • Connection and pride of place for local Primary School students, parents and teachers who walk past the space regularly
  • Bring together and celebrate the local community in central Coburg
  • Collaboration between community members in the immediate area with Council

More!! We love seeing the kids artwork. We stop and look at it on Russel street and laugh at the cuteness of it all. More art and nutrition!
