Calling Merri-bek's LGBTQIA+ community! We want to hear from you!

Merri-bek has a vibrant LGBTQIA+ community but our histories and future aspirations are underrepresented. Help us change that. We want your suggestions for stories of queer collective struggle, organising, activism and joy in the City of Merri-bek.

Be a part of the narrative! Your input shapes this celebration of our collective journey.

About the project

Despite having one of highest populations of LGBTQIA+ identifying people in Victoria, there is a striking lack of documented and published LGBTQIA+ histories in Merri-bek. The audio tour seeks to address this lack of community history by creating an accessible audio tour to celebrate Merri-bek’s LGBTQIA+ histories & community aspirations.

The project will be focussing on collective histories of LGBTQIA+ organising, activism and community.

The tour will have 10 to 15 locations or episodes. It will feature oral history interviews with LGBTQIA+ people about places and events in the City of Merri-bek. The tour will be published as a podcast on the 3CR Community Radio website and as a free app.

This project is informed by the Merri-bek Local heritage action plan, our LGBTIQA+ action plan, and previous consultation by the Lee Ellis Working Group. It is a collaboration between Merri-bek Libraries, Midsumma Festival and 3CR Community Radio.
