We are developing our first Public Art Policy to help us increase public art around Merri-bek.
When consulting for the 2023-2030 Arts and Culture Strategy we heard from our community that they would like to see more public art in Merri-bek. The creation of this policy was then included in the Strategy and Council Action Plan.
A Public Art Policy will allow us to allocate resources and inform a process for commissioning, acquiring, maintaining and decommissioning artworks for the Merri-bek public art collection.
What is public art?
Public art is artwork that is created for and installed in a place where the public can access or view it. It is often located outdoors but can also be installed indoors in public areas like a Council owned building or service.
Public art can take many forms, for example sculptures, murals, screen-based or sound-based artwork. It can be permanent (like a sculpture in a park) or temporary (like a mural or outdoor projection).
Some of the benefits of increasing public art are:
- Beautifying our neighbourhoods
- Sharing stories and cultures and reflecting our communities through artwork
- Encouraging conversations and healthy debate
- Improving our buildings and parks
