The proposed plan
We are recommending in-road tree planting along Eddy St in addition to a raingarden on the south end of the street. The design aims to minimise the loss of on-street, car parking spaces.
Below is an example of what it might look like. Click on the spots to read more.
Length of Eddy Street
Width of Eddy Street
These tree locations are the best option for a few reasons:
- Street space: Eddy Street is not very wide, so we have to make sure there's enough room for pedestrians, bicycles, and cars to access the properties on Lygon Street. The proposed plan takes all these things into account.
- More trees: We want to have as many trees as possible on Eddy Street. The plan uses both sides of the street to place the trees, which means we can have more of them. Trees are good for the environment, provide shade, and will make the street look nicer.
- Good growing conditions: The trees in the plan will be placed in special pits in the road. These pits will give the trees enough space to grow and get the right nutrients from the soil. It's important for the trees to have enough space to grow properly.
- Not many parking spaces lost: The plan tries to keep the number of parking spaces lost to a minimum. Only 2 parking spaces on the west side of Eddy Street will be lost. We want to have trees, but we also need to make sure people have places to park their cars.
- Reducing impacts from flooding: The plan also includes raingardens at the southern end of Eddy Street. This is because that area tends to flood more often. The raingarden will help manage the water and reduce flooding.
- Footpath trees: Although it is possible to put trees in the footpath, the plan prefers to put them in the road. This way, the trees will have more space to grow and be healthier. Putting them closer to the buildings might cause problems and make it harder for the trees to grow.
So, the proposed plan for tree locations on Eddy Street considers all these things to make sure we have enough space for everyone, lots of trees, and addresses flooding issues. It's important to find a good balance between all these factors to create a beautiful and functional street.
What type of trees we will plant
We plan to plant different types of trees on each side of Eddy Street. This is because each side has different restrictions that affect how trees can grow there. By having different types of trees, we can make the area more diverse and help protect the trees from diseases and pests.
East side
On the east side of Eddy Street, there are powerlines and underground services in the footpath that make it difficult for trees to grow tall. So, we want to plant smaller to medium-sized evergreen trees there. These smaller trees will have a wide canopy that lets sunlight through. This way, neighbouring properties will still get sunlight in the afternoon.
West side
On the west side of Eddy Street, we want to plant larger deciduous trees. These trees will lose their leaves in winter, allowing the sun to shine through and keep the street bright. In the summer, their leaves will provide shade, which will make the street cooler. We will choose trees with an upright shape so they don't cause any problems with tall buildings like the one on 464 Lygon Street, which faces Eddy Street from the back.
By planting different types of trees on each side of Eddy Street, we can make the area more diverse and take care of the specific needs of each side. This will help protect the trees and make the street more beautiful and comfortable for everyone.
Seasonal consideration
The time of year when we plant new trees is important for their growth. Late winter is the best season to plant trees because the weather and temperature conditions are just right. We want to give the new trees the best chance to grow well, so we plan to start construction and planting in before spring sets in.
By planting the trees during this time, we increase their chances of success and optimal growth. Late winter provides the ideal conditions for the trees to establish their roots and grow strong.
