Harding Street and Munro Street make up a corridor that runs through Central Coburg between Rose Street and the Merri Creek.

It provides a great local connection to many essential services such as schools, shops, parks, sporting facilities, Coburg Station, the Upfield Shared User Path and the Merri Creek, and makes up a key section of our bike and walking networks.

Despite its importance for travel in Merri-bek, it is currently difficult to walk or ride a bike safely along or when crossing this street.

How we are planning to improve Harding-Munro Street

We’re developing plans to improve this corridor, making it look, feel and function better for all users.

These plans will be developed using community feedback and our technical findings and analysis.

Goals for the street

Project area

This is a long stretch of road, and different sections of the corridor have unique needs.

We've identified 3 street sections within the project area, each with different issues and opportunities for improvement. Future works on this street may happen at different times for different sections.

This section of Harding-Munro Street runs from Hudson Street through to Chambers Street. It includes the Sydney Road intersection and Louisa Street intersection.

The section passes along a busy activity centre in Coburg, providing access to major supermarkets, local businesses, medical facilities, sports clubs and Coburg Railway Station.

It also links to the Upfield Shared User Path.

This section runs from Chambers Street to Nicholson Street. It includes the Nicholson Street intersection.

It is is primarily residential, and the road features a lot of on-street parking for residents.

It is also home to 3 local shopping strips, and acts as a route to 3 nearby schools, as well as the Coburg Activity Centre.

This section of Harding-Munro Street includes all the area west of Hudson Street to Rose Street.

It is primarily residential, with a few small local shops and a park with a playground near Shamrock Street intersection.

Along with connection to the Coburg Activity Centre, it acts as a route to nearby schools, neighbourhood houses, and local reserves.

The existing conditions of Harding-Munro Street place some constraint on the kind of changes we can make.

Some of the factors that will be considered when developing our designs include:

  • stormwater and overland flow pathways
  • heavy vehicle access required for larger shops
  • potential impacts to the 512 bus route
  • narrow road
  • significant trees in nature strips
  • the very high traffic volumes that Harding-Munro Street experiences compared to guidelines for this type of street
