The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is a Victorian Government initiative that rewards Victorians with a 10-cent refund for every eligible drinking container they recycle at designated refund points.

We are working with our zone operator, TOMRA Cleanaway, to increase opportunities for our community to recycle their drink containers in Merri-bek.

Two large reverse vending machines (RVMs) have already been installed on council land in Sydney Road, Brunswick and Domain Street, Hadfield. Over 3 million containers have already been returned through these two RVMs, which is $300,000 back into the community through cash transfers, shopping vouchers and charity donations.

We are now working with TOMRA Cleanaway to install a series of smaller RVMs in Merri-bek, many near sports clubs which can use the CDS as a fundraising opportunity.

A further 5 locations have been identified and we are inviting community comment on the proposed locations of reverse vending machines:
