Council resolved at its meeting held on 23 September 2023 to name a small section of a right of way (laneway) "Kastoria Lane".

Kastorian Association approached us to name the right of way between 217 – 219 Elizabeth Street Coburg North Kastoria Lane. This initiative aligns with our broader commitment to recognising and celebrating the contributions of culturally significant communities, such as the Kastorian Association, to our city’s heritage.

Council resolved at its meeting held on 23 September 2023 to continue discussions with Geographical Names Victoria to assess the name Kastoria Lane name against Geographical Names Victoria’s Naming Rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2022.

On 24 July 2024 the Registrar Geographical Names gave in principal support to use the name Kastoria Lane on approval from the Kastorian Association.

About the name

The Kastorian Association at 219 Elizabeth Street Coburg North made a submission to name the small section of the constructed right of way that leads to the entrance to their site. The name they proposed was Kastoria Lane.

The name aligns with our commitment to recognising and celebrating the contributions of culturally significant communities, such as the Kastorian Association, to Merri-bek’s city’s heritage. It also meets the State Government’s Naming rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2022 and the Naming Merri-bek's Places Policy.

Naming the small section of right of way will assist with wayfinding for the Kastorian Association.
