Design inspiration

The design of the new Coburg Library and Piazza has been inspired by the past, present and future of Coburg.

Below is a selection of past and present images of Coburg chosen by the winning design team, which inspired the draft concept design of the library and piazza. Click on the hot spots to learn more about how these memories inspired the design.

The library

The new library is designed to angle back to showcase the churches from the new piazza, and to provide views to Coburg Station.

The height of the library is designed to sit comfortably between the scale of the churches to the south and the expected larger scale future development to the north.

The library has also been designed with a distinct roof profile, inspired by the surrounding churches, which will be visible from afar as a memorable moment in the city.

The piazza

The piazza design draws inspiration from the confluence of Merri and Edgars Creeks as the flow of water and people informs the character of the space. The piazza is also inspired by Merri-bek as a rocky landscape.

The material selection for the library and piazza prioritises the use of reused and reclaimed materials (including brick and stone) for sustainability benefits and to fit within the existing character of Coburg.
