Albert Street runs through Brunswick, providing access to many local businesses, parks, and the Merri-Creek trail.

We’re working to improve the way people can travel on Albert Street, especially when walking or riding bikes, so that shops, parks and other important services and locations are easier to access for all community members.

How we are planning to improve Albert Street

We’re developing plans for how we will make improvements to support all the ways people use Albert Street, and create a more pleasant and liveable streetscape.

These plans will be developed using community feedback and our technical findings and analysis.

Goals for the street

In order to meet these goals for improving the street, we will be considering changes such as:

  • tree planting and greening
  • raised pedestrian crossings
  • better bike lanes

Albert Street is a long stretch of road, and our changes will vary for different sections of the street, based on their needs.

For example, our analysis has shown what kinds of bike infrastructure are best suited for different sections of this street. A mixed traffic approach, where bikes and cars share the road without protected bike lanes, is most appropriate for the section of Albert Street between Sydney Road and the Merri Creek.

Meanwhile, the sections between the Upfield Railway Line and Sydney Road are well suited for protected bike lanes.

Why we're doing this

Despite being important for accessing many local facilities and shops, the current design of Albert Street does not provide ideal conditions for walking and riding bikes.

Improving the Albert Street streetscape and walking and bike access, will make it easier and safer for everyone to use the street, when travelling locally and further through Merri-bek's transport networks.

Some of the key benefits of making improvements to this street are:

  • better connections between activity centres such as Sydney Road and Lygon Street and Nicholson Street
  • making it easier and safer for students to walk and ride their bikes to nearby schools
  • helping create a safe east-west bike riding route through Merri-bek, connecting through the Upfield Shared Path to the upcoming Victoria Street protected bike lanes.
