West Street in Brunswick is one of the first locations for a brand new park to be delivered as part of our program: A Park Close to Home.
The land of this new park includes 1,3,5 ,7, 11 West Street and 29,31 Breese Street in Brunswick.
After completing a number of drop-in sessions and surveys with the local community, we have gathered ideas and suggestions and developed a draft Concept Plan for what the new park will look like.
Some of the key features of the new park include:
- Trees and plants
- Nature and adventure play elements
- Gardens for community use with proposed compost 'FOGO' collection
- Indigenous plantings and art, such as contributions from local schools
- A sheltered barbecue area, drink bottle refill stations, bike parking, toilets and seating
- Water sensitive urban design elements
Naming process
Following a community consultation and voting process, Bulleke-bek Park was voted the preferred name for the new park, with 64% of the votes. Bulleke-bek is the Woi Wurrung name of the area we now know as Brunswick and was suggested by an Elder at the Wurundjeri Tribe Council. The Elder chose the name Bulleke-bek as it was the original Aboriginal name for the Brunswick area. This name was recorded by Alfred William Howitt (an English anthropologist from the mid 1800's) in his notebook, which is currently held by the Melbourne Museum. The name is believed to refer to the description ‘flat country with scattered trees’.
Park development update - August 2020
Construction has now commenced with completion of the park expected during November 2020.
