At Glenroy Library, we have put our non-fiction books into subject categories such as "Food and Drink", "Arts and Crafts" and "Business and Finance". Previously the books were in Dewey decimal order, which is a system that librarians have historically used.
We wanted to know what you thought about this and how you were experiencing finding what you were looking for in non-fiction at Glenroy and our other branches.
We conducted a survey about this change, as we are considering making it across our other libraries.
What we heard
27% of our survey responses came from Glenroy where this shelving change was made
53% of responses came from other Merri-bek libraries where this change hasn't been made yet
Common theme
What happens next
- We will be making some changes to category labels to make them easier to understand and look different from each other.
- We will also be working on signage to explain what topics are covered within each category to help people fine-tune what they are looking for.
