Address barriers to accessing affordable, nutritious food
There are many community groups in Merri-bek committed to improving food security for disadvantaged Merri-bek residents by addressing the barriers to accessing healthy food that meets dietary needs and cultural preferences. Merri-beks Food relief agencies are an essential service for those in acute need and also supports families facing chronic food insecurity. Council partners with CIS Merri-bek to coordinate a network of food and material relief agencies and other organisations across Merri-bek
Council is supporting the The Food Leadership Action Group to lead the implementation of the Merri-bek Community Food Hub project. The objective is to provide inclusive and supportive settings for people to access nutritious food and build their skills and resilience to support long term food security.
Merri-bek City Council acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional custodians of the lands and waterways in the area now known as Merri-bek, and pays respect to their Elders past and present, as well as to all First Nations’ communities who significantly contribute to the life of the area.
