This project aims to create a sustainable, inclusive space that honours the cultural significance of Merri and Edgars Creeks while providing modern infrastructure for sports and recreation.
Independent consultants Solucio and The Office for Collective Design (The OCD) are leading this process.
The Coburg North area and Merri and Edgars Creeks hold deep cultural and historical significance for the Kulin Nation. It has important gathering spaces, and sites for resource harvesting. It is home to registered First Peoples sites, including scarred trees and scattered artefacts.
The Coburg North Sports Hub area is now home to 5 key sport and recreation facilities, trails and open spaces that are well used by the community. The facilities were constructed before 2000 and have seen minimal upgrades.
The Coburg North Sports Hub Masterplan will focus on these outdated facilities, at the same time aligning with the area's heritage and environmental values. This will ensure the area can sustainably meet the needs of the community now and into the future.

The Coburg North Sports Hub is the working name Council has given to the area encompassing the Harold Stevens Athletics Track, Jackson Reserve, Coburg Basketball Stadium, Coburg Olympic Swimming Pool, Ray Kibby Table Tennis Centre and the surrounding area.
The masterplan is being developed so the Sports Hub can meet the needs of its user groups and the community now and into the future.
During November, you can provide your input through an online community survey, as well as at a pop-up session that we plan to host at an accessible location. When we have developed a draft design for the Sports Hub, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on that as well.
We are using a range of research methods to develop the masterplan, including:
Council plans to draft the components of the masterplan in stages, with different completion dates. We expect to present the complete, adopted masterplan by July 2025.
