About the project

The synthetic pitch will be closed for replacement from October 2024 to January 2025, weather permitting.

Yes, the two natural turf grounds will remain open and available for use during the synthetic pitch replacement.

The construction is taking place at the current synthetic pitch location only within the facility.

There may be some access restrictions near the construction site. However, clear signage will be provided to guide users to the open natural turf grounds and other facilities.

The replacement is necessary to update as the surface has reached the end of its life and is becoming unsafe for play.

It will be upgraded and replaced with environmentally friendly materials and technologies that improve performance, safety, durability, and accessibility.

The new pitch will offer improved durability, lower maintenance costs, better playing conditions, and a reduced environmental impact through the use of recyclable and organic materials.

The project is funded by Merri-bek City Council.

Environmental considerations

The new synthetic pitch will incorporate several environmentally friendly features:

  • Use of recycled materials where possible.
  • All components will be recyclable at the end of their life.
  • The new carpet will have a dual yarn system to enhance durability and reduce heat on the field.
  • Organic infill will be used to lower surface temperature, reduce Urban Heat Island effects, minimize microplastic pollution, and decrease the carbon footprint.
  • Sourcing the synthetic system from an Australian manufacturer to reduce transportation-related emissions.

Organic infill helps reduce the surface temperature by about 30%, mitigates Urban Heat Island impacts, lowers microplastic pollution, and allows for reuse at the end of its lifecycle, all while reducing the overall carbon footprint.

Usage and accessibility

Yes, the two natural turf grounds will remain open and available for use throughout the construction period, and also we encourage people to use Gilpin park, Brunswick park, Raeburn reserve and Gillon oval.

While the synthetic pitch is under construction, activities and events typically held there will be temporarily relocated to the natural turf grounds or rescheduled as needed to other Merri-bek grounds. We will provide regular updates to minimise disruptions.

Safety is a top priority. The construction area will be clearly marked and fenced off to prevent unauthorised access. Signage will direct users safely around the site.
